Ok, what is this thing for?

I just got a 1982 GS550M and working towards getting her running. As I am not too familiar with street bikes, I figured they worked like my dirt bikes with a push/pull throttle setup on the carbs. But, it appears these are CV's so that would mean only one cable correct? Also, can anyone identify what this thing is attached to the carbs next to the throttle cable in the attached pic? Nothing was hooked up to it and the parts fiche on the net has no real description.

    Thanks,
    Sci85

That if I am not mistaken is for the choke cable, and the end will attach to the skinny rod, which then via a pull or push of a choke lever will open or close the choke

Yes, the choke cable goes through it and attaches to the choke rod via a little tab that should be on the choke gang rod.

Technically speaking, it's really the ENRICHENER cable, but who cares?

Here's a pic of the "front" of my 750 carbs off the bike. Same set up as yours, choke cable goes to the fittings on the rod beneth that peice on the left.

Most excellent. I thought it might be for that. It appears someone removed the choke lever and some point in this bikes life. I'm assuming the choke lever was on the clutch side yes? Was it an integral part of the left hand grip assembly of a separate piece? If someone could post a pic of the original setup I would greatly appreciate it.

            Thx,

Oh, and a link to where I might be able to source a new cable and lever would be great!

Those carbs are filthy. Plus they are filled with 30 year old rubber parts.

Yes they are! That's why they are currently disassembled and awaiting bath time. So far though, they are in great shape. Will need new float needles just because I don't trust any wear whatsoever on the these and will replace all the o-rings of course.

But, I still need to understand the choke setup...

                  Thx,

Here are a couple of pictures for you which show how the choke cable connects after it comes out of that thingo you originally asked about in your fist post.

This pic shows the inner cable coming out of the curved attachment and the nipple on the end fitted into the mechanism to actuate the choke operation.

This picture shows how the nipple fits in the two plates at the end of the actuating rod.

                          .
