I'm asking for help! I have an '82 GS1100G which I am fixing up. I have tried to clean up the airbox as much as I can as it was in a pretty dire state when I got the bike. My main concern is the filter. I bought a new K+N filter for it but it just rattles around in a space rather larger than it is. There were minute traces of grey foam on the side covers when I opened up the airbox but other than that there is no trace of anything inside the box except air.

When I looked at the "airbox sealing" page at BassCliff's site I saw all sorts of foam and stuff in there which came as a surprise! I have only ever worked on my Softail which has a totally different kind of air filter. Where do I start in fixing this one?? Thanks!

While I can't answer you in detail about the 1100 airbox, I do know that most guys just use weather stripping to replace knackered foam.

Also, shoot oohsam a PM on here, he has an 1100G with pods so it's possible he may have his old airbox that he may be willing to part with if it's any good...

The filter cage should have high density foam on the sealing surface. Urethane weathertrip foam works well.

I'll look into that - thanks. There seems to be an awful lot of room for the filter to float around in though. I'll take some pics tomorrow, and I might take it to my friendly Suzuki workshop where I have been buying some parts and see what they think. They have actually been quite helpful.

Do you have the cage the K&N filter fits onto?

my 850's cage with a K&N filter on it...

Yes, yes, must have the cage. There are a couple different types too; the attachment tabs are different between the older and newer style.

Cage?? No, no cage at all! That looks like the filter I have though. There are 3 (what looks like) mounting tabs inside. Two are hooked and are deeper into the box - it looks like something should slide between them. Then one at the front. But no cage. I will ask my friendly Suzuki guy about that. Thanks!

Hi,

Here's my air filter cage.



The air filter element fits onto the cage and then slides into the airbox, being held to the top inside by a couple of channels that the cage slides into, like a drawer. Have a look at the parts fiche...

Wow - thanks Cliff! We looked at the parts fiche today when I visited my helpful Suzuki dealer (yes this one dealer does seem to ne helpful!). So I have ordered part #2 according to the diagram you showed, and hopefully it will solve my problem. The "cage" that you have a pic of is something not seen on my bike! It's great to be able to see what it is that I need.
