suzuki gs850 gn 1979 carbs sucking in to much air
hi guys since fitting another engine to my dads bike we fitted the carbs got everything done and fired her up but the bike ticks over fine but when we go to rev the bike it sounds like there is to much air getting sucked in and the bike tries to die. could this be anything to do with the points, condensors or timing?.

What set up do you have? exhaust? air filter/pods? etc.. I doubt it is the points if you know for sure it is running on all 4 cylinders when she's idling. Choke? valves? air box?. all depends on the set up you have. -
Is the sound due to the lack of an airbox or filters?
Timing and points condition is critical to making the bike run. Are they new? Did you set them properly and time them?
Have you adjusted the valves?
Cleaned the carbs?

standard exhaust, pod filters. only the left 2 exhausts are getting warm at front. the ones on the right are cold.
what could this beComment

In case you didn't know, the carbs will have to be rejetted before the bike will run properly with pods.
1-4, and 2-3, plugs fire in pairs so it sounds like your ignition system is working okay. You might want to check for spark on each plug just to be sure.
My guess is the problem is carb related.Ed

Steve is suggesting that maybe the pilot system passages either in the pilot jet, or within the carb body, is blocked and not flowing properly. This is extremely common with people not familiar with proper carb cleaning techniques. Not suggesting this is the case for sure, just maybe.
We get tons of people around here who claim they "cleaned the carbs", when in fact they didn't "properly" clean them. Again, not claiming this is the case, more asking if this is the case.Last edited by Nessism; 03-24-2012, 11:02 AM.Ed
