trying to udnerstand carbs

Last fall, bike starting consuming gas and would not run unless throttle was wide open. So I figured it was time to do carbs. Finally pulled them.

Discovered that the plug I put over the vacuum port (when i changed the automatic petcock (1980 GS550L) for a manual one) was dryed out and cracking.

Would this be the cause for the poor running?

No. It would only effect that one cylinder, and only at low throttle positions.

Do the whole carb dip thing.

I have done much of the other recommended changes (regulator, valve check, etc) so I will do the carb dip.

Support the float tower when removing the pin so that it can't be broken. There is another repair thread on that currently.

The rotted vacuum plug certainly would affect performance in a negative way, but going forward with a complete carb overhaul will probably still be worth it.
