Measuring fuel level in my float bowl

I'm going to measure the fuel level in my float bowls using the clear tube method outlined in Mr. Nessism's tutorial on Basscliff's site. He shows a measurement of 2.89 mm. Can someone tell me what the correct range would be for my 1980 GS850G? Also, should I do this w/ the carbs perfectly level on the workbench, or on the bike w/ bike on centerstand? Thanks.

It only reads accurately with the engine idling, choke off.
It's in the Suzuki manual.

On page 61 the tutorial says to set the carb rack at the same angle as on the bike. Didn't Mr. Nessism measure the fuel level using a carpenter's level to make sure the carb bowls were level?

Take a level out to your bike and use it on your carbs. Then, on your bench, set the carbs at the same angle when measuring fuel level and adjusting the float height.

You can measure with the engine off, just make sure to set your petcock on prime. It's not as if there is a bunch of fuel flowing with the engine idling.

I also like flip the hose for a second to let some fuel drain then flip back to see where the level settles. Not the same as a running engine but . . .
