    1983 gs550l carb fuel leak / float adjustments

    Hello all,
    I have acquired another project bike from a person who did not appreciate what they had. I traded for a 1983 gs 550l and have started to put the poor girl back together. I rebuilt the carbs and replaced the float valves on both carbs. but i have no experience adjusting the float heights for motorcycles. I attempted to adjust them with no success. it seams to be always to much or not enough with this carb. i eather get to much fuel flow or none at all with minor adjustments. the fuel is filling up the bowls and flowing out the airbox side of the carbs from 4 holes that have little jets in them. so my question would be is there a proven method to adjust the floats, how to, and should i pull the carbs back apart and dip them? some of the bearings on the carb are corroded and are not cleaning up like i think they should.
    any help will be appreciated!

      First of all, Welcome to GSR.

      Next, do you have any reference material to show you what your float measurements should be?
      The information that I have says they should be set to 20.5, +/-1.0mm.

      Now, you need to know how to set them? Go to BassCliff's 'little' site, you can download a copy of the factory manual.
      Bookmark that site, it is basically the full library of our collective knowledge of all things GS.

          The "mega-welcome" will have a couple of lists of maintenance items. Most thirty year old motorcycles need about twenty years worth of maintenance. Go through the lists and take no shortcuts.

          Have a look here to get an idea about how to adjust float height:>>> Float Height Illustrations. Yes, it can be finicky but make minor adjustments until you get them just right.
