Problem after Carburetor Cleaning

Hello everyone!

I am new here! After owning a Ducati Monster and GSXR 600, sold both of them to finance school, I decided to become a more "technical" person. So I tried to find the cheapest bike possible, which still "runs". So...I ended with a 1978 GS 1978 for 250 Euros, 44.000km and new tires...quite the deal. Lots of fun so far...Considering how much I paid for it, I don't know why I ever bothered to buy a Monster...

So here comes the problem...cylinder #3 keep stop running, despite cleaning the spark plug. So I decided to clean the carbs, according to what my favorite mechanic said (AB Motors).

I cleaned the carburetors all nice and perfect and put it all back together. One little issue: I am not 100% sure where the vacuum hose goes anymore... I think it attaches to the top nipple on Carb #2, right?

Electric starter does not work (feel free to give me an advice for that one too haha), so I kicked it at least 100 times and the fuel filter (between tank and carburetor), got a little bit wet, however still had plenty of air in it.

It almost started twice, but that's it...

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or maybe a pictures of where the vacuum hose goes, since I am not 100% sure where it goes...

We don't know what kind of bike you have other than it's a 1978 GS so it's hard to offer specific advice.

BTW, the petcock has a "prime" setting to allow fuel to flow without vacuum.

Oh I am so sorry, I meant to say 1978 GS 750

As you sit on bike,Carb #1 is under clutch hand. Perhaps the petcock vacuum hose is attached to carb #3 and is leaking fuel down this line and fouling plug #3. You can plug this nipple on carb, use prime spot on petcock and test. Make sure you turn petcock to "on" or "res" spot when bike ain't running.

Haha, I know! Way to start at this forum... But it goes on Carb #2, right? All the other carbs have the same nipple, except for carb #2... I was thinking that I can just try to suck more fuel out of the fuel line, since the filter still seems very dry...

Are you using a gravity feed fuel filter and NOT one for a pressurized system?

So I figured out the fuel filter! But I still think I attached the vacuum house to the wrong nipple...because fuel started coming out of this nipple...

Is this the right nipple, to attach the vacuum hose? Once again, I really appreciate all your input! I will be more careful next time and take more pictures before I take anything apart.

That picture shows the connector for the vacuum hose, but it's not labelled, so I will try to explain a bit.

Look at the word "Vents". Specifically between the V and the e, then look down, just below the yellow line, on carb #3, is a nipple. It looks just like the nipples on carbs 2 and 4, but those are vents, the one on #3 is the one that gets connected to the vacuum port on your petcock.
