    New petcock?

Just installed a new OEM petcock on my 81 GS650E. For some reason, the gas flow won't stop when ignition is turned off and is spilling over into the airbox. The vacuum line is connected, have tried "prime", "on", "res". Is there no OFF? I crimped the line and it stopped, mercifully. I was under the impression this worked off the carb vacuum. No?

It should just free flow in the prime position only, all others should require vacuum.

OK. Yeah, it still flows in ON & RES position. Is it defective?

Ok, here we go. I called the mailorder place I got it from. He asked if I had installed, I said "yes of course, how else would I know it was faulty?" Sensing I was getting the "stroke", the guy told me I would have to return it to a local dealer to diagnose it was defective. He seemed pretty disinterested at this point. So I went out to the garage to contemplate what I should do. I decided to take the plunge and take the diaphram plate off as this is where the action is. Sure enough, the spring that returns the diaphram was missing. Good thing I had my old crappy one that I could use. Presto, it works A1! Self diagnosed again. I should charge myself a fortune. Beware of the "just get the factory one" mentality sometimes.

Good job. It shouldn't have been necessary to even touch the thing -- it should be returnable if DOA -- but you saved yourself that headache too.

I don't recall ever getting a substandard OEM part... lucky you.
and God said, "Let there be air compressors!"
