    Doing Evaporust cleaning with Petcock still in?

    Hi all,

    So I am doing a Evaporust wash on my tank, the rust is not that bad, just a bit of minor surface rust but I want to go ahead and make sure its out of there. Unfortunately I'm having a hell of a time trying to find something to plug oup the petcock hole. I'm following BikeCliff's pdf file and everything has worked great except finding a plug for the petcock hole. I've been to 3 different hardware stores trying to find a rubber stopper that would fit. I've tried corks, tried caulking around it to seal it.. nothing works.

    Is there some way I can seal the fuel filter around the petcock and just reinstall that? I'll likely only have to have the evaporust in there for about 24 hours because as I said the rust isn't really that bad yet.

      Just rinse the filter well in water and blow it out with compressed air when done. And if you wiggle it ariound as you pull gently on it, it will usually come out of the base. In any case the petcock will need flushed when your done, so removal of the screen is not of any significant issue one way or another.

          A small piece of aluminum, hardwood or plywood, a tongue depressor, hard plastic, anything which is easy to cut and drill. Shape it like the base of the petcock, drill bolt holes, it will cover the hole, make a gasket out of an old inner tube, it won't leak.

              Thanks for your responses. If it's a minor amount of rust shouldn't the filter keep most of it out and then I can flush the petcock with water at the end? If not I will go try and get the materials together to make a plate, but just don't think I have an old inner tube or anything around. Mainly I just don't want to ruin the petcock, but at this point it has probably had minute amounts of rust in it.

                  I strongly advise against using the fuel sending unit, petcock, and gas cap to plug your tank for derusting purposes. Please invest 20 min. and make some proper plubs.

                      Yeah, don't use a short cut just to save some time, it ain't worth it. Follow the advice.

                          Alright, thanks for the responses, I think I can make some sort of cover similar to those. I searched to try and find some photos but wasn't having much luck.

                              update

                              Okay, just wanted to give an update for those who may have this problem later:

                              A thin piece of wood and a old inner tube trick worked. At first I had trouble screwing back in the piece without the gasket getting bound up and twisted around the threads of the two petcock bolts, a little coat of oil along the gasket solved that problem. Of course after finally accomplishing a seal on the petcock hole, as I went to apply the 2" inch plug for the gas filler hole, I accidently dropped the red plastic piece and bolt into the tank (exactly as BikeCliff described not to do) ... but I purchased another and the tank is currently soaking in Evaporust. I'll figure out how to get that out in a couple days.

                              Anyhow, this has been quite a frustrating process at times, but patience and perseverance is key as with any of this type of work.
