    Broken carb internals

    Hello,

Going through the carbs on my newly acquired '82 650e.

Here's the problem: PO broke one of the two "pillars" that holds the float pin in place. It looks like he used some sort of epoxy or jb weld or something to hold it together, but it promptly came apart after poking around.

My question: how f'd am i? can i use jb weld or the like to re-attach the piece? will this hold up to gasoline? do i need a new carb body??

    Thanks

JB Weld won't hold up with petrol in there. You need to either solder the pillar back or fix it by pinning. Loads of threads on here where guys have done that - have a hunt using search and you'll find some pretty detailed accounts.

Or, get hold of another carb of course.

Yes there are threads on how to do it. I have used the roll pin approach with much success , just be very careful centering you drill and how deep you drill into the carb body. good luck

I bought this product to repair broken posts,

but carbs are on the bench and have not been used to determine whether the product will work and won't be installed any time soon. I had planned to test the product separate from the carbs but never got a round to it.

If this product fails I will drill and pin.

excellent, thanks for the responses and kindness towards the uninitiated.

i am interested in /u/ crazy5's method of drilling and then using a 12g wire as the the pin.
and/or soldering the post in place. either as a standalone or in conjunction with the drill and pin.
followups: will solder adhere to the carb body? will it hold up to petrol? if so which type of solder?

thanks again and sorry for any redundancies!

This stuff works for soldering pot metal. They call it welding in the adverts but it is more like soldering:
