    GS400 carb replacement options

I'm in the process of "restoring" a 1983 GS400E. The engine was swapped out for an earlier model, with mechanical timing. The carbs aren't even for this engine, but they're the right size, not properly spaced, and trashed. In my logic of thinking, I should be able to use 34mm carbs from other bikes to get it running again. What are my options for replacements form donor bikes?

Gs500 would be my first choice. Lots available and parts are similar to the bs34ss. Jets are the same type and all you would need is to drop the main to 117.5.

Pull the cam cover off. Check if there is a slot in the middle of the exhaust rockers. If so. Its a pre-82 engine. If not its a later model with a mechanical advance fitted to it.

You need to use the mechanical advance with the old ignitor and not the new one that has the advance built in.

Those carbs are about 5mm wider than the bs34ss but you can slot the brackets that hold them together and bring them in enough to work.
