muffler length

Does the length of the muffler have any impact on the engine , tuning etc. The ones I have on my 1981 GSX 400 f have rusted though . I can only find ( here in Sydney anyway ) mufflers that are 24 inches long that look like the stock items. I think the stock one's are about 27 inches long. I wont to try to keep the bike looking original with out going for the dunstall type .

Hey John, I'm far from any sort of guru with exhausts but I believe that the length of the headers before the collector on a 2 to 1 definitely makes a difference to where peak power is delivered in the rev range. I'm not sure on whether longer makes it higher in the rev range or lower, but I believe that that is the case...

I mocked up my custom 2 into 1 with some measurements from GregT on here but I didn't keep the PM so don't remember what they are I'm afraid

His measurements were optimal for a race bike though.

They're not even, the left one's about 770mm to the collector and the right's about 870mm to the collector.

thanks Pete . I asked around at work today and some of the boys said that they didn't think it would be an issue . I'll keep on looking for the 27 inch mufflers as I think the 24 inch ones will look to short.
