GS850 idles high, reeks like fuel

I'm looking for a little direction on what to do next here.

81 GS850G freshly rebuilt carbs, resealed airbox, new manifold O-rings and 1 new manifold boot, new airbox boots, checked valve clearances only 2 under .04(lowest feeler I have). I have a fresh battery, and I rewired the fuse box, I only was getting 8v at coils, now I get 11.5v.

I bought the bike with a K&N drop in(freshly cleaned and lightly oiled), and mac 4-2 pipes, and still has factory jetting

I can start the bike without choke sometimes, but when it starts it idles at 3k RPM, when warmed up it idles at 2k RPM. I can put on the choke or let the clutch out a little and it'll level out at 1100 rpm. but when I blip the throttle it goes back to 2k rpm. Also the plugs are black(sooty) and the exhaust fumes burn my eyes.

Not sure what to test for/replace next. I'm going to redo the airbox seal again, because I'm not 100% that its sealed. and maybe do the coil relay mod to get just a little more juice up there.

How many turns out are your air/fuel screws? Running too rich?

I started at 2.5, but thought the high idle was from the screws, so I think I'm at 1.5 right now

I have checked out basscliffs site, which is awesome. I was just wondering if someone else out there had a similar issue, and had performed something I haven't yet to be able to fix it, or just some ideas in general. I'm just fishing for thoughts right now, and will recheck everything this weekend.

1.5 turns out on the pilot screws is too lean. Carb rebuild tutorial linked in my signature.

BTW, you adjusted those tight valves right?

quick question, from what I've been reading I'm somewhat confused.

Does turning IN(tightening) the pilot screws richen or lean?

Clockwise leans out mixture. Counterclockwise richens mixture. There is a great write-up kool_aid kid did on this called "Adjusting_Idle_Mixture_on_CV_Carbs" Do a search for it. Quite helpful.

reset floats, resealed airbox, reoiled K&N drop in, new plugs gapped at .030. she finally runs pretty well, not perfect but rides nice, and idle doesn't hang at stops. I still need to adjust the valves, but I'm waiting for the tool, then I have to find out whats in there and get the correct ones ordered.
