The slide indicates that back firing has been occurring
That would mean I have one extra long spring. Should it just be replaced? Is that even possible without ordering one of those un necessary rebuild kits?

Have you checked all eight springs?

You should have four of each.

The "marks" on the bottom of the slide do show evidence of some backfiring, be sure to check your valve clearances. Tight clearances (the typical scenario) will delay closing of the valves, and will also keep them from transferring heat to the head, causing them to burn easily.

If it's the two screws that hold the needle assembly onto the slide then yes a dremel can get in there to cut the screw head. I fracked a head up and did exactly that.

I just counted again to make sure I did not make a mistake, I have 5 long and 3 short springs. Thanks for the valve tip, will make sure it is checked. I have another head entirely going on it soon (ported and polished) so I will just leave this one alone.

Left my carbs in the pine sol soak too long & I think they are etched now. Is it a big deal?

                Should I paint them now?

So you have the wonderful white chalky crap? I usually just spray some oil on them.

Yeah, and some of it is darker vs the rest.
