    Continued issues with carb

Ok, so I finally dipped the carb and replaced the O-rings. Put the carbs back together, put them back in, and took it for a test ride. It idles nice, rides nice, is smooth... but it wouldn't go above 4k rpm, around half throttle.

So we took the carbs back off, checked the float levels, set them, and stuck them back on, thinking it was a fuel starvation issue. I just took it for a test ride again, and it is still doing it. The first time, I tried to run it with choke on, and it did not help.

Airbox has been weather stripped. Boots and o-rings were done last time they were off. Petcock is new as of same time the boots were done.

It did not do this before we had the carbs off to dip them, but it didn't run very well either.

Will it go above 4k in 1, 2,3 gear? air filter element in? Have you tried loosening gas tank cap to see if it's causing a vacuum - not allowing enough fuel to flow under load?

It is stuck at 4k in all gears. I tried the gas cap trick before I pulled the carbs for the second time.

have you check your mechanical advancer (If you have one) to make sure it ain't frozen and not advancing ignition timing?

The 82 450L is an electronic advance, can't move it very much, but can take a look see.

            Was the airbox on it?

It was, and still is. No pods have ever touched it.

Nah pretty sure yours is the same as mine and has mechanical advance.

Take the timing cover off and ensure the advance mechanism moves freely and springs back quickly.

'83 was the model they went to electronic advance...

Mind you, it may depend on what happened with your replacement ignition? Not sure on that one as you haven't told me yet

Maybe ignitor failure. Hard to diagnose with out a new one to try.

Can't you check the advance with a timing light?

No timing light, and no ignition scope that can be borrowed. It does have mechanical advance, but there is a bit of leeway in the placement, moving it did not help.

Could be a random ignitor failure, seeing as we have a ghetto one installed. Pete, i'm still trying to get that wiring diagram! It looks like we might have to play around with it.

I just don't have the money to plop down on a new one, especially when there might be some other issues going on. Just had to buy new spark plugs and wires for the cage, geez!

I took the air filter out, washed it, and put it back in. Didn't help, but sounds a bit different.

Did you check the butterflys on the carburetors to make sure they are fully open at WOT. Perhaps your cable is not allowing them to open fully.

I didn't actually look to check, but i listened, and can hear it click when opened all of the way.

What does a WOT sound like?

It clacks against the inside slightly when the butterflys go close to horizontal. It has always done this, so its not a new problem, but I can hear it when it is open.
