 Homemade worked for me:

I just did two loops and linked them together with vacuum T fittings and a short piece of tube. I kept drawing air in at the fittings until I zip-tied them all.

I plan to treat myself and the GS to a new Carbtune this Christmas. Been using mercury forever but I think it's time to update. I sure won't miss those heat condensation gaps.
Personally, I wouldn't bother with the home made tool. If it's that important to save money then I hope it works. Synching carbs is a fairly precision adjustment. You should use a tool capable of the task. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

Another source for mercury is old light switches. I come across these once in a while while renovating. They are silent when used so they are easily identifiable. Any electrician might have a few kicking around as they cannot or should not be disposed of in the trash. There is a fair bit of mercury in these. To get the mercury out just drill into the housing over a jar. There may be some legal issues about having mercury in your possession. I think they have tightened the laws up on this.

I'm sure that the official tuning devices are the best but I used the bottle trick to sync my carbs (using four bottles linked together) it is very sensitive and moving the sync screws a wee bit makes a difference. The throttle is very responsive and seems to have worked well. So if you are short on cash it may do in a pinch and I'm sure it is better than no sync at all.

By the way I am in the High Ridge area near St. Louis-sorry first time I've seen this thread.
