If it were me I would braze or silver solder the plate there, welding would bring unnecessary complications, you could do the job yourself with a map blowtorch.sigpic

The problem is that the place it needs to go isn't flat, kind of a rounded curve in the whole area. Maybe I could hammer it flat enough….Comment

Chris, brazing adds a fair amount of heat and with it comes warpage.
I know, I used a #1 tip set as small low as I could to braze a patch in the bottom of my '78's tank.
I suggested tig as it's easier to control than oxy/act. In the right hands of course.
