    High idle cause "lean popping"?

    1982 GS1100e - V&H street megaphone, APE pods

I was just told that some of my popping may be due to faulty header (header to engine) gaskets. Four separate copper gaskets, I was told.

I was also told that my high idle (1300-1400 rpm, sometimes 1500 or 1600) could be causing some 'popping'. I was told to adjust the idle to 1100 rpm after fully warmed up.

While I had this expert on the phone, I forgot to mention an occasional popping sound that seems to come from the intake.

Suggestions? Second (third and fourth) opinions?
1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

Popping out the exhaust can be caused by exhaust leaks at the pipe gaskets. Popping through the carbs and the high idle can indicate you have an intake leak, either a vacuum leak at the carbs or at the carb boots would be my first guess.

High idle and popping out of the carbs means you're lean on the idle circuit, either by air leak or jetting

How tight is the megaphone to the collector? If it is a bit loose, when you let off the throttle it will suck in some cold air and cause some popping there. For the intake check all your rubber boots what are they like? Though a high idle popping would (like everyone else has said so far) a lean condition. Get busy.

Will do. But first, I'm going out for a ride. First spring in a quarter century that I've had a motorcycle. I've got a lot of catching up to do.

But think how much MORE you will enjoy it once you are caught up.

Carb to engine? (I'm not much of a mechanic.)

Does your choke either not work or idle to the sky?
Does the idle hang when you rev the motor?
Is the idle really rough but smooth out a bit when warm?

Choke works (one hand helping out down below).

Sometimes a little bit of 'hanging'.

                      Smooth, even smoother when warm.

Header gaskets, carb boots, or both?

                        Head gasket???
                        no
You'd be able to hear a blown head gasket and the bike would run like sh!t.
When it is running spray just a little carb spray on the boot on the engine side. If the idle rises you need boots. Make sure you do not overspray and it gets sucked into the filter or you will get a false reading.

That would be a 16-valve engine.
