For a pipe, 2-3 sizes up from stock.

One size is 2.5 units. So if the stock were 160, then 165 or 167.5 should be good. Since you already have 170s in there, it is time to do some plug chops and see if they are too rich. Then go from there.

            Plug chops? Can you elaborate?

Your carbs have 3 ranges: Main jet, needle and pilot jet.
You examine the color of the plugs at each range. Since all you have changed is the mains, you need to examine the color of the plugs after they have been running on the mains only. Black is too rich, white is too lean, and tan is just right.
If anyone has a link to the actual procedure, please post it here, as I cannot find it at this time.

Not quite sure how to tell you this, but stock main jets are 115.

The 160 and 170 jets you are talking about are probably in the intake throat at about the 8 o'clock position?
Those are your PILOT AIR JETS, not main jets.

The main jets are down in the bottom of the carb, in the float bowl.
