VM26 jet needle & slide assembly sanity check...

I read something somewhere (truly cant remember) about shimming the needle and the purpose of the fat OEM washer and it made me think that I dont have mine assembled proper...

From top (notched end) to bottom (pointy end) on jet needle....

Fat washer, e-clip, thin washer, spring...

    Place into top of slide

attach plate with three holes, fasten with 2 screws..

correct? Somewhere I read that the spring was on top of the fat washer......

Now I f I am shimming, I replace the fat washer with shims... This is what I believe to be true..

Ok, now what does the spring actually do if nothing but hold the jet needle against the plate?

Thanks, and I did read through that as well. Page 7 shows a nice un-assembled view however, the slide, jet needle and spring are out of sequence.
