metal rings between carb and airbox

1982 GS1100GL

Does the o-ring shown in the attached picture go in the outside lip, like it's shown in the picture, or the inside lip? That is the air box in the picture. When I pulled it out, the rings were on the inside lip, but I think maybe they could have slipped back there. So I figured I'd ask before putting it back together.

Inside..its an expander that holds the boots groove tightly to the airbox housing. Overlap the ends and grip it with needle nose and get it in place, release the pliers, and then spread the ring so the ends snap back in line with each other again.

Well son of a... I have an 850 and it didn't have those, nor does it show them to buy. Do I need those?

They are supposed to expand the boot so they dont pull off the airbox once the housing is seated in the groove. I dont see them on the fiches either. Must come with the boots maybe???? In any case if your boots arent pulling out of the airbox I would sweat it.

They must be a non repro thing, or maybe just don't come with my bike? Mine aren't coming out but their fit doesn't inspire confidence either. I bet I could find something equivalent if I have any trouble. Interesting though.

Just looked up the OP's bike. It is for his, but they don't show repros for them. My bike doesn't show them so I guess not needed.

Well, next time you have occassion to take out the box look and see if there is a recessed ring area in line with the housing walls. Would be about 3/8 inch wide groove for the ring to set in Its a spring steel type deal and I dont know if you could roll some from some strips???? Never tried to roll spring steel myself. I would say they are maybe 30 or 35 thousands think.

They are on my 750E and the 1100E has them as well. Years 80 and 81 that I know of.

I haven't seen everything, but I haven't seen them on anything older than '82 either. They're cheap. One could try ordering them from an '82 850 parts list and install them. It might help the rubber resist shrinking as it ages, maintaining a seal on the airbox.

that musta been a thing that was added on the later models. I looked up an 82 850g and that diagram shows it.

Or, you could try gluing them into place with some black weatherstrip adhesive applied into the mating groove and allowing them to dry/harden over-nite.
