4 into 2 exhaust system or 4 into 1?? Engine performance differences??

    Hi

i have a 1979 suzuki gs750l. I am considering getting a new exhaust system for this motorcycle.
    Some possible cheaper options are:

    1) mac 4 into 2 all chrome turnout exhaust (003-0308)
    2) mac 4 into 1 chrome megaphone exhaust system (003-0301)
    3) vance and hines 4 into 1 megaphone street system with chrome header pipes and muffler (12009)

the stock setup is a 4 into 2 with a pre-muffler body in between the headers and the muffler for the two middle pipes of the four.

From a performance standpoint, is it best to stay with a setup that would more closely mirror the original stock setup??

Any insights would be appreciated as i continue to try to sort this out.

From a performance prospective, the 4 into 1 is a better design and the V&H is a better choice. Many have complained of the quality and sound of the Mac products when compared to the V&H while the cost is not significantly higher. I have one on my GS850 and will soon be getting one for my GS1000, soon to be GS1100.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.

I have found that unless things have changed a lot over the years, the most peak HP comes from a good 4 into 1. But the mid-range is better on a 4 into 2. Byron from V&H personally told me that a lot of the 1/4 mile pickup with their pipe was the 24 lb weight savings. The factory is a little more interested in a broad powerband, so back then it was all 4 into 2. I doubt that they did this, at far greater cost to produce than a 4 into 1 unless they thought the extra weight and expense was worth it. Newer stuff may be different, and lots of stuff has single muffler setups, but is it better or just weight and cost savings they are getting. Riding my GS1100, I liked my stock pipes the best, and properly jetted, I think the V&H 4 into 1 was quicker getting going, and had a tad more punch wound up. I prefer to ride with torque over a few more ponies, ended up going back to stock. JMO
