Intake boot (carb to head) question.
On my '79 850, #1 plug is getting sooty black. Would air leak from a bad boot cause it?Tags: None -
No..if air leaks it tends to run lean which would be an ash grey..like used charcoal colors.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550
NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it. -

Oh yeah, i got it backwards don't i. Guess i gots to pull the carbs and figure it out. Ignition is new dyna set-up. Seems to run alright, wonder if maybe it's a bad choke plunger?Comment

Could be a bad "choke" plunger.
Could be a "choke" plunger that is not fully closed (make sure the lifting fork is turned the same direction as all the others).
Could be a pilot fuel screw adjustment.
Could be a pilot air screw adjustment.
Try swapping plugs between #1 and #2 to see if the plug might be the problem.
If #1 still soots up, try swapping plug leads between #1 and #4.
