    Running way too rich

    Here's something I've been curious about for a long time, hoping the carb gurus out there can confirm for me.


    My '79 1000 came to me with a crappy Mac 4-2 exhaust on it. I have been led to believe that this system does not require re-jetting.
    I have the carbs off right now and see that the mains have been changed from std. 95s to 100s. Is this a 2-step size increase?
    It runs nicely but too rich and the plugs show it with a sooty black color when pulled out.

    I have recently purchased a stock exhaust and am thinking I should go back to the standard size #95 jet. Also the clip position on the needle is
    placed in the middle of the 5 grooves. Is this the right place for the clip?

    The VM carb guys must be riding. Since you are going to stock exhaust, I'd start with the stock main jet and mid groove, but what are you running for intake setup?

        The mikuni jets go in 2.5 increases, 95, 97.5, 100 etc.. Your clip being in the middle is the correct stock 79' spot. If you have a stock exhaust I would find some 95 jets and fine tune your air and mixture screws. They should be about 5/8th out from bottom on the fuel and double that 1 1/4 out on the air. Remember thats just a good starting point you may have to adjust from there a tich.
