    77 GS550 Mufflers?

    Hello,

I've been looking around for ideas to replace the mufflers on my GS550. The existing mufflers look like they were added by a PO and are louder than anything needs to be. Here is what is currently on it:

I've found a couple posts on Ebay for the full exhaust from a 1980 GS550 (right and left separatly) for a sort of reasonable price but I'm not 100% sure they will fit. Anyone have any experience with exhaust from those years care to chime in on that?

If that option fails, has anyone had any luck putting a universal muffler like this on an old GS?

    Thanks!

Hi there, you could try a set of Dunstal type universal silencers. My son James has a set on his 78 GS550, not loud but sound good.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that. Would this likely require additional adjustments to the bike? Carbs, etc...?

We fitted bigger main jets 95. With you bike fitted with slash cut mufflers the carbs may have been done. Worth a go, them slash cuts must be loud !

heh, yeah, they're ridiculous. i had no idea how loud i was being until i saw my neighbors 78 gs550 with stock exhaust idling in his driveway.

me, "why is that bike so quiet?"
him, "it's not. yours is stupidly loud".

I think James a new member is selling some stock pipes for your bike.

I did end up getting that exhaust from new member James. They were in awesome shape, went on smooth and I can not believe how much quieter the bike is. Might have to make some carb adjustments in the spring once I can actually get it outside and warmed up more, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.
