Which carbs should I use on my 850?

I have a pipe and pods on my 850 rebuild I have been wrapping up. I am ready for carbs.

I have a stock set of bs 32's cleaned and ready to go with a Dynojet stage 3 kit sitting here ready to install.
I also have a set of VM 29 smoothbores and a set of o rings here to rebuild them.

I can go either way, stock would be a instant bolt on, the 29's would require some guessing on some offset for the intake boots to make them line up perfectly as they are a smidge off. And some other various alignment and installation tricks.

The bigger question is would the smoothbores be "too much" carb for an 850?

The CV carbs are smooth and give a wide range for smooth throttle and rideability, and I know the VM's (which have the accelerator pump) would be a snappier , crisper ride which could make it a head snapper for easy cruising in the country and daily riding.

Opinions?

Carb offset shouldnt be a issue if you have the rite 29's. Are you sure there Kaw/suz ones? and a 850 isnt too small for the 29's. They start being perfect carbs for Kawa Z650 all the way up to GS1000/1100s

Ok, double checked the carb spacing. It looks fine. I must have been mistaken on my previous measurements.

VM29's didn't have an accelerator pump.

I'd use the BS32's. Just be sure to use real K&N's or APE pods. No junky Emgo filters.

Maybe not stock on the VM's Ed, but there were 2 different accelerator pump kits made for VM's and CV style carbs as an add on. I came across these in a 1981 performance catalog I got recently.

The other is just a pump with tubing and small jets you thread into the bell opening of the carb where the pods clamp on. That's the kind I got.
Thumbs up on the APE filters. That's what I have on my 1100.

Humm, I stand corrected.

I still think the stock carbs are a good match for the 850. VM29's are a performance carb and have appropriate compromises.

If you are looking for best bang for the buck performance, the 29mm's will knock your socks off You'll have to do a bit of playing around with the jets but with pods it's pretty quick. 117.5 mains and possibly one up on the pilot jet should have your right in the ball park if not perfect.

Well I have new intake boots ordered today and I started rebuilding those smoothbore last night. They are super super clean. So just a regular dip after I spruce up the outside and these things should reassemble in a snap. I really want to use the smoothbore just to give them a try but I had already purchased a Dynojet kit. I guess it's nice to have options
