Exhaust repair and re-chroming
I am pondering restoring the exhaust on Miss Bugly. The original black chrome was the victim of a Scotch-brite pad and three brain cells, thus both pipes are covered with swirlies. The chromers around the Willamette Valley refuse to re-chrome, claiming they have no way to clean the carbon and gunk from inside the pipes and mufflers. I have been told that a hot caustic soda dip will clean exhaust systems completely, and that this can be done by any machine shop. Has anyone done this, or knows if re-chroming exhaust is feasible (or cost-effective.) Thanks in advance.

Look into Ceramic Coating as it will do a pretty good job and look pretty close to chrome. I found this place, Custom Powderworks, in Springfield (http://custompowderworks.com/contacts/)
I had the pipes on my 550T done by a place here in Ohio that are still looking very nice.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

A big thanks, although I should have known there would be a place about three blocks from where I live. I will find out more tomorrow. Thanks again.Comment

Thanks, I am exploring all options, and I thought the "contaminate my tank" excuse was just that. The clarification makes sense to me. Looking forward to the info.Comment

I don't think the "carbon issue" is bogus, it just takes extra care and someone that knows how to plug the various openings.Ed

My 2nd hand info is that the critical issue is whether all of the chemicals from a particular dip tank will drain out, so as not to contaminate the next tank.
He dips the pipe in a rinse tank, and, if it drains, he'll chrome it. No idea if he does black chrome
