Extra set of carbs at a decent price

Just picked up an extra set of BS32's from a GS750E at a decent price off of eBay.

The selling price says $75 shipped but it was actually $60 with free shipping as a "Make Offer" deal. Ebay never discloses the actual accepted offer.

They're a little rough now but I'm pretty sure they'll clean up nicely. Thinking of doing the rebuild and then turning them around for sale. Curious as to what model they should be rebuilt to? I have jets and needles for anything 650,750 or 850. The main air jets will work for a stock 750 or 850 but they can be drilled out to fit a 650.

I'm always looking for good rebuild-able cheap sets. These "cheap" sets are getting harder to find lately. I use to be able to pick them up almost weekly but haven't found any for cheap in a couple months. Usable sets that still need rebuilding for GS's are selling for more then $200 on a regular basis. Don't tell me that these bike are becoming popular now.

I think I have 8 sets of fully rebuilt BS32 and BS34 carbs sitting at home and another couple sets that still need to be rebuilt. Maybe time to liquidate.

Looks like a great deal. Hopefully the throttle shafts are not seized (notice how the butterfly's are not closed like you would expect them to be at idle). I noticed this because I recently bought a set of KZ750 carbs and the throttle shafts were seized on two of the four carbs. I complained to the seller and got a little money back but the monkey business added to the complication of the rebuild.

I've also noticed that carb prices are rising. Like you I've been buying low on ebay and refurbing and then reselling. I try to dress them up to a higher price point but the market is hit or miss. I redid a set of 650 carbs and another 750 CV's and didn't have much trouble selling either. The 1000/1100G set I did moved slower though, which surprised me. My best movers have been KZ750 CV Keihin's. Those never last more than a week. I've got a killer set of KZ900/1000 VM's that have gone two ebay cycles without a bite now. That one is a head scratcher to me. I thought I had gold there. Oh well.

I've had several sets that were "seized" but not too hard to get them going again using a good sonic cleaning and a penetrating oil bath. Usually they can be broken loose once that's done. Just don't try to get them moving until you've done the first treatment. Many times the shaft seals would rip if you don't get them lubricated first. Once they break loose they you just add a little lube and they stay moving from then on.

So what do you think I should build them up as: 750 or 850's? Got lots of parts for either one. Maybe just get them cleaned up and wait for a buyer to specify what they need?

I'm not sure which is more desirable (650 or 750). Most likely the 750 but not sure. You might want to search ebay for availability of sets and "sold" sets to get a feel for the market.

Yeah, I know about working the shaft with oil to get it to move. No chance on those KZ carbs I had though. Too much corrosion.

What kind of ultrasonic cleaner do you use and what kind of cleaner product do you use? I'd like to use something other than Berryman's because that stuff removes plating off all the steel parts.

I built the sonic cleaner myself. Posted a thread about it here a few years back. I use Simple Green Pro HD which is only sold at Home Depot and is not green. It's purple. Doesn't effect the color of metals. I use Berryman but not the same stuff you buy now in auto supply stores. It's the original formula that designed for use by professionals. It's Berryman Chem-Dip part number 901. It's the one gallon replenishment for the 5 gallon (p/n 905) professional cleaner. You know you've got the right stuff because it smells like moth balls.

Received and rebuilt the first set. Came out great with no problems. Ended up turning them into stock 1980-81 GS850 carbs. So what happens? Another set falls into my lap on ebay:

Originally had a buy-it-now price of $40 with $14.15 shipping and a best offer. Offered him $35 and they took it within 15 minutes. Listed it as a 1982 but, based on the choke assembly, I'm betting it's a 1980-81.

This is becoming an obsession. Just picked up another set. These look in great shape so I couldn't turn them down. I now have 6 sets of carbs rebuilt and ready for use. (2) 1100Gs, (1) GS850, (1) 1980-82 GS750, (1) 1983 GS750 and (1) GS650 with the new set (GS850) on the way. Plan to keep an 1100G and an 850 for spares but the others will be eventually liquidated. I just love rebuilding them. Amazing how much the difference is between when they come in and what they look like after.

List as fitting what different engines they will and jet as needed.
Let Joe public know you will build them to spec.

^ agreed. What would prevent me from buying carbs off eBay is I don't know if the guy rebuilt them properly. I would tend to lean towards forums being a better way of selling carbs at a fairer price because we develop reputation and know what goes into a proper rebuild.
