    Sad story about my carbs...

    I bought a rebuild kit of genuine Mikuni parts (including the brass parts) for my '81 GS850G carbs. I bought the brass parts because the bike had pods when I bought it and I had no way of knowing whether it had been re-jetted. I found myself a mechanic on CL who sure talked a good game; he supposedly has been "riding and working on these things for 40 years", and used to work as a prototype engineering tech for a company that was a competitor to Mikuni. And not only that, he comes to you - which is a huge plus since the bike wasn't running at the time and I had no way to get the bike to him - sixty miles away. AND he was cheap! He sure sounds qualified, no? What could go wrong?

    So I printed out the last few pages of the famous Mikuni BS-CV Rebuild Tutorial and figured out how to adjust the four butterfly valves, and adjusted the four pilot screws so they were all the same (after removing each one to inspect it, 2.5 turns from bottom). After doing a few other things, I put it all back together, and what do you know...... it runs much better! I'll probably buy another rebuild kit and do it myself this time.

    By the way, I paid this "pro" over $300 for this. Not sure what I'm going to do about that.....

      STOP BUYING USELESS KITS!!!! All you had to do was look at a parts fiche to see what stock was and then read the numbers on what you have. This would answer if they were rejetted or not.

      Secondly, the rebuild tutorial is here and you dont need anything except the CV ORING KIT for our esteemed member Robert Barr at cycleorings.com.

      And third, you can look at the top of the carb section and youll see STICKYs. Theres one about CV CSRB TUNING PROCEEDURES.. Follow its steps. I will PM you my number and you can call me if need be.

      I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

          That's what I thought I had found - a QUACK who KNEW how to fix my carburetors. Apparently my sniffer is off these days though.....
