    White smoke coming out of the airbox

    Hi!

    First of all greetings from Portugal, gotta say this is one hell of a community!! I'm a newbie in bike matters and definetly a newbie on technical and mechanical matters. But I gotta say that I am thrilled and I want to learn.

    So let's get to work.

    I'm the proud owner of a fully stock 1979 GS850G and recently I noticed some white smoke coming out of the airbox.

    Can someone please tell me what this means?

    Oil vapor and blow by gases come off the top of the valve cover and are sent over to the airbox via a rubber tube. The gases then escape out the bottom of the airbox via a breather.

      The gases get sucked back into the engine and reburned when running. Does it smoke when running or off???

        Many service manuals here and tutorials on both margins. Spend some time clicking around and save to your favorites list.

                I noticed it when I ran it for a couple of hours in a small gathering here in my hometown, and it was a bit hot that day. But in other rides - solo, I still notice it but the bike doesn't feel different its just the white smoke.

                  Normal for the most part. If there is a lot of blow by though that's not good though. I wouldn't worry and just work on maintenance.

                    Thanks!!! I went ahead and started sniffing around the web for original factory manuals and even got the haynes manual! Got parts lists, user manuals. Thing is, I'm not much of a mechanic - lets put it this way, I want to venture myself but I lack of time due to the fact that where I am currently living - Lisbon ( wich is like 300km from my parents house where the bike is), I still don't have a garage. Now I have "some" weekends where i try to come "home" and work on her.

                    Again, thanks so much for the fast replies with great advices!!!

                      Bikecliff has the OEM factory ones. Haynes and Clymer have both been known to have missing and / or eronious info from time to time.
