The first 3 came out nice and easy, but the 4th didn’t. I should have grabbed a beer and called it a night.

It happens. I was fortunate that mine came out without problems.

 Good luck!

Not sure it was impatience but rather destiny. From my limited experience these bolts are not always in the best shape when we attempt to remove them. I have a head on a project GS650G with three snapped off. I have drilled out the remaining stud in the past and successfully rethreaded the hole but it took time and patience. The end result was good and the challenge or leaning during the journey was worth it .... sort of.GS550T 1981

Whatever you do this will help better than most things on the market. If you have to have the best penetrating oil, it's probably Kroil but it really stinks (as in smells bad!) https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...B&gclsrc=aw.dshttp://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

Their Rescue Bit drilled into the bolt like it was wood—I was blow away by how effortless it was. Took less than two minutes.Attached Files

Most of the time exhaust bolts can be extracted if proper care is used. Use penetrating lube and heat if they don't come out using a small 1/4" ratchet handle and minimal effort. Grab a 3/8" ratchet handle and twist hard and they will break off with an alarming frequency. I wish more new GS owners would research before damaging them.Ed

I agree, but I am determined to get that broken bolt out or retap it. I have to redeem myself. Man versus machine. I won’t let it get the best of me.

Left handed drill bits. Gotta stay in the center of the old bolt and increase in drill size one step at a time. Use pent. oil. When the drill gets near the edges of the threads and the old bolt is just a shell it usually spins out.Last edited by Nessism; 08-12-2018, 01:39 PM.Ed

Install your new bolts with high heat anti seize compound. Stainless Steel polished Alan head bolts are a nice upgrade. Between the two you will never break an exhaust bolt again.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.
