    Vance and Hines repack

Anyone repacked a 4to1 V&H? Never done mine and had them 30 some years now. I definitely need to quiet it down a bit. Even with earplugs it?s a bit much.

I have...quite simple really...I use FMF packing...just cut off enough to wrap around the baffle once..I use thin wire to wrap around the packing to keep it in place.

First a layer of screen wire, from an old screen door, or hardware store, held on by small wire or masking tape, will make it last longer, (maybe not 30 yrs.). Wrap tight with muffler packing, fiberglass matt, house insulation. Then I wrap masking tape around the packing, tight to hold it on during instillation. Pack all that will fit in there.

The hardest part will be removing the baffle. Soak the screws for a while before even attempting to remove them if they haven?t been touched for 30 years. The baffle might require a slide hammer and some sort of homemade hook to pull out...
I used safety wire in several spots to hold mine in place

I packed mine with 000 steal wool. Work very good, knocked the octaves down quite a bit, without killing any of the deep tones. Sounded much better than the fiberglass IMO. Only cost a couple dollars to find out. You can add or subtract as you see fit to find the tone, and voluum you like. If it's not what you were looking for, it only cost about $4 to find out you'd rather have the more expensive fiberglass packing...

That reminds me, I need to repack my 4-1 again. I do it about every 6 years.
