Your 650 is similar to my 550 and that little bit of movement will help.

As far as getting rid of the air box, how much time do you have to constantly remove the carbs to troubleshoot any running problems? Search the archives here and it's going to be pretty evident that you'll do a lot of work for it.

Absolutely ,as I said before, 1/2 inch is a big deal.....and all you get.
once carbs are properly cleaned, this bike will run super with stock setup.

I took one carb apart, and it looks whistle clean. Not at all what I expected for a 38 Y. O. bike, with 4,200 miles on it. But, as long as they are out, I'll get a carb rebuild kit for em. Sorry, but this forum will not let me post a pic at this time

You probably already know, but the only rebuild kit you need is a set of o-rings. A full set for the carbs, plus 4 for the manifolds. Do the drain plugs have o-rings?

You might get away with the gaskets - personally I would probably replace them. Your call on that one.

Do not get a rebuild kit - only the orings from Robert Barr - www.cycleorings.com and bowl gaskets. The jets just need to be cleaned not replaced

OK, replaced O rings, cleaned the carbs, put them back in, then found out I forgot to hook up the throttle cable. So, out they came again. Re-installed them, put the filter box back in, then the battery. Tomorrow, I install the tank, and hoses and give it a go. The only thing I could see wrong with the carbs is that the carb floats were way too low. About 1/4" each. They are now perfect.

Not filling the fuel filter, even on prime. It did "run" a bit on starting fluid. Won't stay running.
