    Balancing

I'm balancing my carbs on 80 550L have outer 2 done any idea how to get the tool onto the middle nut/screw throttle cable and bracket are in the way. Also the idle screw is moving up and down quite a bit as I try to adjust it.The minute I put my finger on it it starts revving up.

Motion Pro has a long reach adjuster tool. You need to level 2 and 3 first and then move to the outside. You can't do a proper balance working outside to inside, it's got to be inside to outside.

I also remove the choke cable holder while I'm adjusting the carbs on both of my 550s.

Cheers removed the bracket got tool to fit had all 4 gauges set level but bike was at nearly 3000 revs turned idle screw out all the way and revs wouldn't go down. When I try adjust idle there's about a quarter of inch movement up and down in the idle screw no movement on my 850 GL any suggestions how to stop the movement as it's hampering the setting of idle.

Air leak issue? Did you replace the carb boot O-rings?

If the butterflies are all adjusted a little too far open during the sync, is it possible the idle screw just doesn't have enough travel to bring the idle down? I have no idea about the play in the individual adjusters allowing them to move up and down.

Something is not correct in the idle screw assembly. There should be no movement as you have described. You have to correct that first before anything is going to work for you.
