GS650G - Choke/Starter Cable Obsolete

My choke cable on the '82GS650G is dying. It's down to one strand.

The fiche offers two parts:
58400-45110 - for the old style with center knob
58410-34X04 - with the left side thumb lever

The old style is readily available but doesn't fit my bike. The new style is discontinued.

I have checked Ebay for used parts without success. One part is listed, but does not match my bike.

Alternatively, the 58410-47X00 for the '82 GS650GL is readily available and darn cheap. My understanding is that it is probably a couple inches longer than I need. Does anyone have any experience with fitting the longer cable in place?

My only other choice would be to pay for a custom cable. Does anyone have experience with the likely eye watering price I might expect from that solution?

The longer L cable should work fine as long as it's the same style choke lever on the handlebar. I usually upgrade all of my bikes to the later style handlebar lever choke as opposed to the one mounted in the center of the triple trees. Never ran into a cable compatibility problem. The extra length of the cable should be easily compensated for through proper routing.

As was mentioned in the thread last week, choke cable elimination. Just the reason the old choke on the carbs was a better idea, there could be no wrong cable or discontinued part # for one.

Ya, but some of us like to have an available choke withing arms reach without groping for it.

Not quite. If you seriously can't find it, Modify some other cable....go to the bicycle store-it's about the right gauge -a rear brake cable might do it... and, you can make the ends if you need to-solder,flux, on cleaned ends that you spread a bit.

I had very poor results as a kid with this technique using silver solder. The cable ended up kinda brittle and never lasted a year on our mini-bike. Have you had good results with lead based solder? I have bicycle brake cable and casing in the basement.

Ouch on pricing for shipping...that's taking it somewhere very uncomfortable.

I tried to get a couple of battery terminal brackets shipped over from Wemoto, and it was the same issue. Fixed shipping price and unable to alter the method to make the purchase worth it.

I just did some shopping and comparing part numbers. Yes, your 650G cable is NLA. Yes, a 650L cable is available. The part number for the 650L cable is the same as for my 850G. I don't know how much different they would be in length, but I am reasonably sure that the 650L/850G cable will work just fine.

Probably an "L" cable is the way to go but...if it's too long it can be hard to route it to not look too weird...and, when you put any extra bends or loops in a cable, it increases friction so, you want wide radius-gentle bends if you want to use up extra length with bends.

Yes. Lead is better. You must be careful of the heat used...over-tempered steel is brittle-avoid red-hot. and any oily residue on the cable is of course a no-go. Don't trust flux to clean it....get a nice lump on there and shape it.


as an alternate,..you can try pre drilling a small bit of lead, push your cable through, and then push a small nail in as a wedge in to lock the cable...like an axe wedge, eh?- then shape your lead to fit...this is labour intensive and won't suit the smallest ends.

lastly, for EMRG you can try a stopper knot in the cable-NOT a plain overhand knot- a real stopper knot.

I ordered the 650GL cable in June. It arrived about a week ago and I slapped it on this afternoon. I just needed to give it a little dog leg under the tank.

I am blaming Covid, instead of Bike Bandit. Denial maybe?

No doubt BB did not perform well since covid started. But their problems with delays, notifications, etc. got way worse, probable because of it. There's a whole other thread devoted to the topic. Partsoutlaw had a couple of hiccups with some of my orders, but all-in-all performed pretty well. PO has always beat BB on prices when I've compared, and they always have $4.99 shipping with a promo code that is at the top of their page. I think most here have pretty much given up on BB. I know I have.
