Petrol in the oil - after long lay off

gsx250e 1980

- been stood for 3 months - last run was perfect. petrol in tank
- started it up and was hard to start but usually is after a lay off
- put it on res as thiught may be low on fuel.
- then just would not start at all.

- Saw a line of fuel from where i had tried to bump it
- petrol in the oil big time ! another inch up dipstick.
SO
- Ring s- no way
- floats on carbs ? poss
- But before i have had this not so bad but when the fuel petcock disintegrated.

- petcock off and there was dirt blocking a small hole.
- cleaned blew out
-petrol doesnt not flow in normal mode but does freely in res Q) is this right ? should it flow freely in res ?

Anyway. Petcock i think fixed.
do i need to check the floats ? (a pain)

A common problem with some Suzuki Vac taps regardless of the condition of the float valves and heights.
Fuel will just weep past them when standing for long periods.
Had it happen couple of times and fitted an inline manual tap as insurance.
Sounds like you know the procedure to drain the oil and spin the motor with the plugs out to clear it out before filling with fresh oil.
As for the tap, depending on the type it should have prime , on and reserve.
Prime should be the only one that flows with the engine off.

Pet cock should flow fuel freely only in Pri. position. ON & Res. should require vacuum to open & let fuel flow. Yes, gas in crankcase you have both a not sealing pet cock & a leaking needle & seat. Just my opinion.

Never had an issue with the carbs and engine is as sweet as can be.

The tap flows in rsrv like a fountain ! and at some angles in normal mode. the diaphragm looks fine but there has to be
soming wrong internally.
On that tap there is a prime screw.

am considering this from wemoto. pipes point wrong way in pic but it has a prime on it , a proper one.
and i have a load of tubes to try. ill go for the petcock first and see.
A risk as i may needd to strip the carbs but ill take it one step at a time

Another story that validates my decision to go with a Pingel tap a couple of years back. Having said that I am thankful that I am so anal about turning it off each time when I should.

OIl drained - plugs out engine turned over and all fluid out.
Will try again wemoto as i kinda like em and get the one for 50?.
No pingel for this little bike but poss for my 550e if and when.

Will update if i is just tap as im taking a risk as got too much to do to start on a carb refurb (even though
i could do it in an eve)

The float valves should hold the fuel back even if the petcock is leaking..... To get this you have to have leaks on both as stated above.

needle valve / seat

OK so very likely fitting a new petcock
and needing a vacuum this should solve
what is happening BUT
not the underlying additional invisible issue.

I can whip the carbs off as I'm sure it's
not the hellish job as on my 550.
Would a clean up do or a new needle valve is needed ?
the needle valve seat ... nothing can be done about that?

I think my old gsx250e deserves more than half
a job so it's off with the carbs .

Looked through box of parts and have 2 new
needle valves. Now just need time.

I've not been into a GS250 carb, but the seats are replaceable on the larger bikes. I had a set of GS1100 carbs off & opened up 4 or 5 times trying to get the leak fixed. Finally discovered the "O" ring on the seat was the culprit.

Forgot how easy it is to get gsx 250
carbs out.
Quicker than having shave.

town for some tinnies and then I'll
strip the needle valves out and replace
it all while having a garden party sat in a chair.

pulled the carbs.
removed floats , needle valve and of course
the tube thing that seats the needle valve
as per pic.
I used to be able to do this with my eyes shut
and forgot about the removable seat ..
.

anyway new seats don't fit and needle valves
too small. this from ebay years ago.

so old seats and valves back in for now
and I'll order from dealer. but will
risk new tap only.

update :
Only place I can find needle valve and
bowl (seat) is cmsl 38? each for
valve and seat per carb.

I hope a clean up will do and new
tap. Mad the price if carb bits!
