Rotor/stator question

Hi there,

I'm still busy perfecting my GS 850 with sidecar and after a year I have replaced the
most electrical parts. last week I replaced the stator with a new one. The old one was a 12 pole and the new one an 18 pole. that should be fine the seller said but I found out that I only get 3,6 volts AC over the three leads from the stator now. I ploughed through the forum and apparently you can't simply replace a 12 for a 18 pole without changing the rotor. I have a motorcycle graveyard in the neighborhood and they have several rortors. But how can you see what the right rotor looks like for an 18 pole stator? Eh.. is it difficult to pull the rotor off ? Or is it wise to stay with the 12 pole. I think somebody will know. And yes, I have already a Shindengen 775 rectifier. Thanks!

I think 12 pole went away with the 1979 model year. As long as the rotor is '80+, it should work for you.

EBAY one, then you will know how it looks.

Yes I can do that. I allready know what mine it looks like but the one on the foto's from the graveyard dealer looks the same for me. I just wonder if you can see visual differences.

I found the right information in other posts. I will buy a rotor with 6 magnets and see if she is charching. Thanks!

Simply looking at photos will be difficult to tell the difference, but most reputable places will have information on the donor. If they say it came from an '80 or '81 (or newer), it likely will not be a 12-pole.

Who Dat?, don't you mean that a 80+ should be an 18 pole?

Thanks, I will do a magnet check with a screwdriver and count de magnet sets. And yes, after 80 it is a 18 pole with a 6 magnet rotor.
