Starter motor rebuild

I started a new thread as this is a topic that may interest all and thus searchable.

I need a place preferably in the UK or anywhere in the world that can rebuild starter motors where the inner magnets have come off and are damaged. A place that has the magnets or can cut to size ones with the correct radius and thickness.

Anyone with an old bike is gonna face this sometime when replacements are not available.

Mine a GSX250E 1980 Suzuki.
Starter motor part : 31100-11410
Two I have found to be available in the entire world both at nutcase prices.

It comes down to if the internal magnets of the correct radius can be found. Installing them is reasonably straight forward.

Has anyone got personal experience of solving this scenario ?
(oh buy the expensive few left in the entire world is not the answer I am looking for )

Most likely way cheaper than a professional rebuild ...

I did not ask you to repeat yourself, i asked for clarification.

I think you meant to say why you want that was not YOUR question ... correct, it was mine.
You just do not feel like explaining. Well that is your perogative.

I cannot "imagine all starters have gone" .... we are not there yet and i cannot imagine that will happen in my lifetime.

Does anybody know where on this planet people who can restore old starter motors. In particular to fit (or at least locate ) new magnets ?
There are many technical issues with this simple question and no place I know can do this in my vicinity.

(I myself can now restore starter motors bar the magnets)
The person who will do this will ask a few questions like thickness and curve / radius and composition.

(Mine will work perfectly if I had one magnet )

And to explain I tend to desire to mend rather than throw things away.

Can't help over there, Over here there's a Co. called Rick's Motorsport electrics. that does a lot of motorcycle stuff. They'd probably be the one to contact. Have you looked up motorcycle starter rebuild where you are.

Motor rewinders will have a clue, or at least put you in the right direction.
Over here, there was a local specialist in automotive starter rebuilding - he would tackle anything and did a cracking job. Closed down now, though.
There are fewer of these guys left as most starters these days are throwaway items and replacements are dirt cheap.

Yep, back in the day the local owned shops would fix almost anything, just to prove they could. Our last one died a few yrs ago. Supposed to be one a couple of towns over, but I've not needed him yet.

There must be somewhere where they make sheets of various thicknesses and curvature of magnets. They seem to be made of composite carbon easily ground to size.

I would even say the diameter of the magnet would be pretty standard ..... and the magnets are just cut pieces glued in. The diameter of magnet available I'd even say was one of the pre requisites of the design.

I know I will after a year of bump starting my 250 bike with a empty starter in situ not cabled up I will bite the bullet and buy one for 200? plus (one of the few available now). I just don't like that when my fault is so damned simple to fix.

It's a slow burner but I will never give up until I find someone who makes/ sells these magnets and I can extract one from them.

Anywhere in the world will do as I can then contact them and ask - "ere where do you get the magnets ?"

The starter must be fixed .

Update:
I found a shop with an expert in it !
An expert on batteries and rebuilds starter motors. And has 30 plus years of experience.

Within a few seconds of me unloading my starter he said without any prompting - that I would never find the glue to do.it as it will be too thick !!!
That and will never find the magnets. He has tried this many times and only got it to work perhaps twice.

So this motor is dead. I know exactly what is wrong with it but can never get the parts.

Final glue suggestion:
If anyone tries this you will find the strong enough glue but put it on so so so so so thinly or it can never fit the rotor.

I'd love to know what that glue is ?

Anyway thread closed as not possible to mend.
A shame as this variety of starter is no longer available.
As I said before this will hit us people who like io bikes !
Back to the last ther thread where I'm trying to find a second hand one or ask the Chinese to make me one for us owners ....

The magnets in the photo you posted appear largely undamaged. So why do you need new magnets? I repaired a starter motor where the magnets had come loose and had a quite a few fine chips taken out of them by the armature. Hardest part was getting rid of the chips which stuck to everything. Once it was clean I glued the magnets back in position with a high temperature contact adhesive (CRC Ados F38) and reinstalled. The starter works perfectly and has done for the last three years.

Local breakers/wreckers? There must be a GSX250 starter motor sitting in a yard or in a shelf somewhere in the UK?

I am a looking ! and ringing round !! But I can't find one. So wish it had a kick start like my ultra reliable RD250D. Bump start in second gear it is.

(Still gutted about the impossibility of locating magnets for my starter)
I know somewhere in the world a chap cuts / makes / molds various thickness of the material at various curvatures......
I think if I was designing a motorbike starter system I'd look to see what cases fit etc .....

(I'll add one thing about the Loctite glue. If you put on you will never get the magnet out again in one piece ! It is madly strong and the magnet will break meaning a dremel clean up of the inner case)
