Thanks ... dont know what ive done but all im getting now is a click click from the starter solenoid and battery seems to be getting too warm . Im going to strip it all and start again DOH !
I went through the r/r setup on my 850 a while back. It's probably the same setup you have. The stock unit failed, overcharged the battery and put enough strain on the stator that it failed within a month. Here's a link to my adventure.

If your battery has been overcharged it may be time for a new one, even if it shows it has a charge. Have it tested under a load at an auto parts store. It may not put out the cranking amps needed to turn the starter.Roger

. Tried so many ways to get the old r/r to work but no luck . Put a new 5 wire r/r and it cranking over lovely
The old wiring loop has been cut out .

Its been a hard slog . I was struggling to get any spark from the right hand coil but eventually found that the wiring once again was wrong with no power supply to it , plus the electrical block going to the igniter needed cutting out as it was beyond repair. Not having another suitable block i just wired it straight to the terminals . We now have a good strong spark to all spark plugs
Ordered a new rebuild kit inc o rings for the carb as the rebuild kit that came with the bike was missing one or two o rings plus one air screw was the wrong type . Im getting very good at rebuilding the carbs for the 3rd time
Rebuilding the mechanicals is one thing but putting right electrical mistakes from someone else is another .
