1980 GSX750E(T) Starter motor going bad

    Hi everyone!

Recently finished rebuilding and painting a 1980 GSX750E(T?) I bought a couple months ago. Got everything working perfectly and fired her up for the first time yesterday.

The only problem is the starter motor, it has been repaired several times by previous owners and I dont feel comfortable driving the bike for long distances with this one. Tried searching around for a new one, but seems like the MITSUBA SM-229 is only possible to buy used.

I found a website that offers a rebuild service for the old one, or I have to get another model starter

So my question is: does anyone know if this new type of starter (61-304) will fit my bike or if there is any other starter that will fit?

Log in and see the list of all models that share your starter motor...

There's no shortage of used motors, from a Dutch breaker in this instance...

Worthwhile getting a used one and obtaining an overhaul kit for it - much cheaper overall.

Thank you for the write up! I could surely get new parts for my old starter or buy a used one and refurbish it.

But I would much rather buy a new one if possible, since the bike doesn't have a kickstarter and I want it to be as reliable as possible for longer trips. I found a parts dealer in my country (Norway) where I can get this new type (61-304) for around $150, but don't want to purchase it untill I'm 100% sure it does in fact fit, since they don't accept returns unless the part is faulty. So I'm still wondering if that model will fit

You might want to crack open your starter and inspect inside. There are rebuild kits around, such as from Stockers, which can be used, assuming the internal parts are not all corroded or worn.

Repaired several times by previous owner... that doesn't seem good. If things were done correctly, once should have been enough. Do ya'll have local starter-alternator repair shops in Norway? They should know their business and fix you right up.

Wrapped in glassfiber mat after shorting out, broken connection between windings and the + pole, and overall beat up condition. I could buy new parts but would kind of have to change everything to make it "like new". So I'd rather buy a new one and not think about it

Always got to be wary of previous owners, we see that kind of work from them pretty often.
