Neutral light intermittent and goes out.

    1980 GS550E , pretty standard.

My old workhorse has developed a fault and the neutral light sort of flashes on and then goes out .. showing as if not in neutral but bike is.

Electrics is so not my think but where would I start to look. I know you guys know the issue ....

Bike gears work fine and have never ever had this issue before.

First would look at the wiring connector (male and female bullet connector) for that neutral light wire (I think it’s blue, maybe, but look at your wiring diagram) should be under the gas tank along the top left top frame rail. Pull it apart and clean it.

If that’s not it, remove front sprocket, remove the gear selector sensor and clean it. Be careful to retain the pin and spring that live in a hole behind the sensor.

That is one proper looking motorcycle! I approve.

To add to the clean the contacts inside the cover.. give the spring a little stretch too to ensure good positive contact.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

This is the pin and spring referenced above.
