    ‘78 GS1000 Wiring issue

    Hi everyone

this bike has been an on and off project for the last couple of years. A 1978 GS1000 Skunk. I got it to the point where I thought I would enjoy it a bit but……not this weekend.

I took it out for a short ride yesterday and the bike was running pretty good. I figured today I would dial in the carbs alittle better and had it running for about 5 mins and it started smoking. Shut everything off quickly and started pulling off the panels to find a burnt wiring harness. 2 of the fuses were also burnt. I touched the rectifier(photo) and it was piping hot.

I let the bike cool down a bit and changed the fuses and it started fine but the rectifier unit seems to be getting hot. Is that normal? Could this of happened because the rectifier needs to be replaced?

    Thank you

    Carlos

Not normal. rectifier cooked your wires. change all that crap out for the SH775 mod. get rid of that 2 piece garbage. Nessism may have a unit for sale. And ask him for the wiring picture for it.

You trash the rectifier and regulator and run stator wires to the new unit, And two wires to the battery with a hot wire to the fuse box. Does away with the inferior stock junk and last forever. PM Nessism for aunit and the wiring diagram. better charging and less heat stress on the stator.

Youll have 5 wires in the stock set up. Youll notice that there are two sets with the same color like mentioned in the thread. Just tape one of the doubles aside and use 3 wires going to the stator of 3 different colors. youll figure it oit.

I found someone that’s selling an FH020AA that came off a Ducati. Would that be similar to the SH775? He says he also has the connectors. Other than the unit itself what else would I be looking for? Are there any other components I need to change on the bike to make this unit work?

              thank you

The FH020AA is a shunt type, with @ the same form factor and same plug-ins as a series type SH775. But you’d be better off with the series type, as shunting was a contributing factor to the demise of the original charging system. Again, check with Nessism and see if he has one to sell. Or try to find one on eBay. He buys used ones, tests them and resells them, with nary an issue. whatever you get, make sure it’s a genuine Shindengen.

and do yourself a favor and get the OEM Triumph connector bits.
