That's what's threw me the previous owner has had an extra ground from the starter to the battery but I couldn't think why

So the wire from the starter solenoid and the 2 B/W wires from the loom can all go on the battery negative??

The ones from the loom are likely meant to pick up other parts on the chassis such as battery box etc but as a general rule as long as you have a ground path to everything and all black /white is connected to ground you will be ok.

I think it's a weather thing... with the corrosion rates in our part of the world (UK & Ireland) I think that's something that gets drummed into you early! Of course you shouldn't need extra but a bit of redundancy helps in that locale.

Looking at the picture Grim put on here. There's no wire connected to the Neg. side of the batt... Wondering, can you call all those wires grounds?, or are they just wires connected to the frame? No doubt will be grounds when batt. neg. is connected to the frame but until then they aren't grounding anything... or are they?
