hello all,i put new brushes in my starter (gs850gl)less than 2 months ago.i just took out starter so maybe i could see somthing wrong.well the brushes i put in are just pieces now,anyway 2 are totally gone.any ideas as to why so soon.or advice.i dont think i put them in wron pretty simple install but did sound different hmmm.thanks

The starter commutator (spelling?) must be rough, thus wearing down your new brushes. I've heard that motor repair shops turn and polish commutators for just such reasons so you might want to pull out the yellow pages and get yours taken care of (or replaced).Ed

Bearings?
Maybe the bearings that hold the communtator are worn out and it's turning 'out of round'. I haven't had to work on a starter for several years but that seems like a possibility to me.

A probable cause is the starter clutch. If it does not release then the starter continues spinning all the time and the brushes will wear away VERY quickly.
I have had brushes wear out in 200 miles because of this problem.Comment

My bike always fires right up but my starter "crows" a little bit as the bike first fires. I often don't notice it because the bike fires pretty quickly with almost no cranking. Is this "crowing" a symptom of a less that hardy starter or starter clutch?1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser
