    battery light

    hey
    working on a buddies 83 gs1100
    rlly sound bike
    runs great i just cant get the battery light to go off,
    the story on the bike is that he stopped riding a few years ago when he had a kid and now his wife has more time to watch his son and he wants to get back to riding
    so he gave the the bike, i cleaned the carbs, changed the plugs , and oil and a new battery
    he said that the battery light had been on b4 but he never had a problem starting the bike, after i seen that it was on i tested the output voltage and it was around 17 volts, so i bought a new regulator from rmstator on ebay
    i installed it and retested voltage is now 13.65 at idle and about 14.5 at 5000 rpm, battery light just wont go out
    any ideas?

      That light is for special batteries with a battery acid level indicator built in, it works kind of like a gas gauge I guess. Dunno, never actually seen one. Modern batteries don't have it so the light stays on. Pull the bulb, or you can short a wire someplace to make it go out, or rewire it to use the light for some useful warning like a sidestand light or something.

          As tkent said, the light has NOTHING to do with the charging status of the battery.
          It only senses the fluid level in ONE of the six cells in a battery that is capable of accepting the sensor.

          Three ways that I know of to turn the light OFF:
          1. Get a new battery that will accept the sensor.
          2. Remove the bulb.
          3. Connect the sensor wire to a switched 12 volt source.

              The batteries are available with the extra hole for a sensor probe. There are a couple of options. You can buy the aforementioned battery or look for sensor by itself. There are two types of sensors depending whether you have the push in or screw in cell caps.

              Usually you simply replace one of the caps with the sensor/plug.

              As stated the other options work just as well. Short term fix is a piece of electrical tape over the light.

                  ok, that makes sense
                  i just figured that it was a low/high voltage light
                  on the plus side i checked the charging system because the light was on and i found that it was overcharging, i wouldn't have checked it otherwise, but since the light is useless now ill just pull the bulb out
