upgrading from points, question
Is there another way to upgrade to electronic ignition other than dyna-s? Wondering if the pickup and module off of a 80s 850 will fit a points 79 850gTags: None -
If you fit up the signal generators, ignitor, and the associated wiring, it should work.Ed

I have the signal generator from an '83 850g and the wiring harness with coils and ignitor from an '85 gs700es on my '79. Both of those bikes use the same ignitor. The dyna s would be much easier to procure and install. I went that route because i got the parts really cheap.Comment

would you like to repeat that about the igniters..i'm all earsI have the signal generator from an '83 850g and the wiring harness with coils and ignitor from an '85 gs700es on my '79. what i mean is...to my knowledge the 8v. electronic advance igniter even though they look the same/plug in the same as the 700/750 will not interchange.
you did use the 700 harness you said and that would let the trigger plate which does plug in the same on the 8v. and 16v. function.
this is what i have always thought and i'm just trying to confirm that the 8v. and 16v. electronic advance igniters are the same or not compatible as i have always thought.

hi, the Dyna S is trouble free and your can beat the price.
I think that the advance curve and max advance are not the same on 8v and 16v.i have no more 16v bike to confirm but on my Dyna 2000 ignition i have position for 8v and 16v.
If i remember the 8v has more advance.
its time to bring the strobe light.

It just seems to me that there are a lot of posts complaining of the Dyna-s droping a channel and leaving the rider stuck with 2 cylinders. It seems that the OEM unit lasts longer and does not give as much a problemComment

Only the '83 uses the same style trigger as the 700, i think it's the 850's trigger plate (that will only bolt up to the 850) placement that is the 2 degrees different that the two motors are in timing.would you like to repeat that about the igniters..i'm all ears

I like the OE system, but have never read here about anyone having trouble with a Dyna S.Ed

i was just wondering about the igniter(s) itself.
700 vs 83 850.Comment

The main issue here, other than all the rewiring, is that when the igniter fails (and they do),they cost 3X what a Dyna S costs.

I had one of the pickups on my Dyna S crap out but it was due to overcharging(16V
). Just make sure your charging system is up to snuff and Dyna will be trouble free.

ok, then I will brave switching out to the Dyna
. I love the bullet proof reliability of points but it is a pain in the rear adjusting often as my bike is my daily driver.

Go through your system and repair any bad connectors. Electronic will fail if there is not sufficient voltage, or your battery gets weak. That's the only down side to electronic.Comment
