    Ignition timing on '82 GS850

I met a guy with a '82 GS850 that he is trying to get running right. He said he needed to set the ignition timing. I had just done my '79 GS850 with a timing light so I said I would give him a hand.

But is there any adjustment with his newer bike with electronic ignition? My Clymer manual for my GS750 says that no adjustment is required for '80 and later bikes with electronic ignition.

    Any thoughts?

    he is mistaken...
the plate on his model has a small slot that does not do much of anything..
crank it hard counter clockwise and lock it down.
your points model does have an adjustable timing plate.
tell your friend to move on to something else.

        timing and base plate

what does turning the base plate counter clockwise do?

i kinda figure that it advances the timing a bit , but by how much?

        thanks

he probably meant no maintenance required after initial adjustment setup.

            what i'm saying is....
the 1/8-1/4" or so slot equals about nothing..maybe 2 degree's max either way.
it is more than safe to add what total timing you have available when you can.
this is not a serviceable area unless you slot the holes or unless a dyna S is installed.
turn it full counter clockwise and lock it down and forget it.
