    Kickstand/Center Stand Switch

Is there a kickstand/Center stand switch on the 1980 GS 550L?

To the best of my knowledge there isn't.

I see none in the parts fiche.
        Is this an inspection issue?

Its not an inspection issue. Just been trying to resolve a start button Issue and it was proposed to me... could it be a malfunctioning Switch at the stand.

No. The only starter interlock is the clutch switch. You can try bypassing that if it hasn't been already. Follow the wires from the clutch switch back to the headlight bucket and plug the harness ends into each other.

Try wiggling the clutch lever while it is pulled in and while holding the starter button.

              Yah, the circuit is:
              fuse
              to
              kill switch
              to
              starter button
              to
clutch switch (called "interlock" on schematic)
              to
              starter solenoid.

And starter solenoid is grounded through its mounting bolt to the battery box. But sometimes the battery box is not well grounded, which is why there is a black/white grouund wire from the wiring harness to improve the grounding of the battery box. But sometimes is problem with the other end of that wire not being grounded so causes problems with starter solenoid (and R/R operation).
[more can be said, but for now ... ].

Best way to troubleshoot this would be with a volt meter or a test probe/light to see where you are loosing it.

Yea I have been going at this one for a while. Miked has been a great help with all my Voltmeter testing. Clutch bypass is done and I replaced RH controls and Solenoid. I am currently looking for broken wiring etc throughout and possibly just rewiring that portion.
