450 Electrosport stator
Has anyone replaced a stator on a 450 with an Electrosport stator? If I plug in 1980 GS450 on the Electrosport website, it finds a R/R, but no stator, but for the 400/550/750/850, it's all the same part, which has the same OEM part number as the 450. I haven't tested my stator yet, but it seems every couple weeks or so, my battery doesn't have enough juice to start the bike. I replaced the R/R with an Electrosport unit several years ago, so I don't think it's that. I'm going to try to test it tomorrow if possible.Tags: None

The Electrosport R/R isn't much better than the Suzuki part from all I have read. They make fine stators. Check the fluid level in the battery. If it is low, it's overcharging. I seem to remember a post about someone who burnt up a number of Electrosport stators with Electrosport R/R's. If the system is regulating properly, the stator should run indefinitely. The only way you will know is to run the tests in the Stator Papers http://members.dslextreme.com/users/...ator_check.pdfLast edited by OldVet66; 07-03-2011, 01:52 PM.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

I pulled the battery out on Friday when I got home from work, because I had stopped for gas after getting out of work, and it wouldn't start. I was lucky that a few college guys were coming out of the store and gave me a push start, as there was no hill nearby. The fluid levels looked fine, and the battery is brand new as of April. I charged it up and rode it to work today, but that's pretty typical. I'll charge it, and it will be fine for a few weeks, then it will die on me usually at 10pm after I get out of work. There's a bit of a hill coming out of the parking lot, so I can get it rolling and pop start it in 2d gear. Either tonight or tomorrow I'll try to test it to see if it's the stator.Originally posted by OldVet66 View PostThe Electrosport R/R isn't much better than the Suzuki part from all I have read. Look at all the connectors. The stator connectors especially like to burn. This causes a high contact resistance that creates a lot of heat, and could reduce your charging voltage. You might get lucky and just have to replace a few connectors. You should go through the entire system and clean all the connectors and put them back together using dielectric grease.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

I haven't looked into it in great detail to be 100% sure, but I'm still pretty sure that the stators are the same, so maybe just noone has bought the electrosport stator for a 450 yet so they know?1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Stator gs450l
I replaced both my R/R and stator on my 1981 gs450l last July. I bought an electrosport R/R, but I know I bought a different brand stator, like you said I couldnt find it from electrosport. I think I bought a stock one. The electrosport's R/R is oversized and you need to make a new hole to mount it.
This is the last post I posted last year after i fixed my bike.
The bike is up and going. Replaced stator and R/R. Thanks for the help. I never wanted to have to do that work on the bike. I wanted to sell it this summer now I changed my mind. The stator took two weeks, almost to get to me from Ricks powersports. What a wait. Glad to be riding, again.....
Thanks for everyones help. The wait for the part was killer. The suzuki dealer order the Electro sport stator for 120$ and then 2 weeks latter they say they cant get it. So they ordered the Rick's motor sports one for 140$got it for 120$ too.

on the battery, I'm only getting 11-12 volts at idle, and not much more than 12.5 at 4000 rpm. I'll have to continue the other stator tests tomorrow.

Went at it again today, and found one of the leads from the stator to the R/R was not connected (or not connected properly). I replaced the female bullet connector and hooked it up; that got me up over 13, which is better, but still not where it should be. I'll have to keep at it and replace the other connectors and see if that gets it to where it should be.

That 13v reading may just be the result of a low battery state of charge. When my charging system went out the other day, it took a short while (maybe 100 cruising miles) after the repair to bring the battery voltage to a normal 14v or better charging rate.Originally posted by davidduarte View PostWent at it again today, and found one of the leads from the stator to the R/R was not connected (or not connected properly). a rare outsider and was only built until 1983. Who still has one, it gives her so little.

I don't think it's a low charge, as I had just unplugged it with a full charge. I think I'm going to replace all the bullet connectors between the R/R and the stator and see what if any difference it makes. It is encouraging that I'm getting better numbers though.Originally posted by fishfarm View PostThat 13v reading may just be the result of a low battery state of charge. So out of curiosity David, what are the AC voltages your stator is showing? Curious because once I fire mine up again I need to do the stator and R/R tests on it.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

just tested the AC voltages. Anyone want a plate of fried stator? All the readings were 50 volts, and it should be over 60. At least now I know what the problem is; I'll have to order a new one.Originally posted by pete View PostSo out of curiosity David, what are the AC voltages your stator is showing? Bugger! I was hoping it would come up good with new connectors... oh well.

I did replace the bullet connectors, and before I left for work hooked up the multimeter, and got about 13.4 volts. That's better, but according to the Clymer manual, it should be 14 to 15 at 5000 rpm. The AC readings according to Clymer should be 75 or more; I only got 50 on each leg. I'm going to test the R/R tonight or tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping that it is still in good shape, as I replaced it about 9 or 10 years ago.Originally posted by pete View PostBugger!
