    Best place to get new stator and gasket?

    Need a new stator and crankcase gasket for my 1978 gs550. I have been looking around. Is there any brands I should avoid? What do you guys recommend? I only found one fit on fleabay around 95 for the stator and 15 for the gasket.

    That's typical pricing for new aftermarket stator. Your stator is probably a 12 pole model-in 1980, 18 poles became the norm, so make sure you check. I recall Basscliff using a Caltric ? stator with good results- about $90 on ebay.

      You can order both items from Z1 enterprises. Not the lowest priced stator, but it is high quality. The crankcase gasket is good as well, or you can buy a sheet of gasket material from your local auto parts store for about $4.50 (buy the blue colored stuff) and make your own.

        One of the first places I looked as I ordered all new jets and needles from them in the past however the website says they do not carry it for the 550.

        Z1 Enterprises specializes in quality Motorcycle parts for Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha Classic Japanese motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's.

            Hi,

            My favorite stator is the Rick's Electrics unit. You can buy direct from their website but I think other online vendors sell them a little cheaper. You might save $20 or so from Rick's price of $140.

            I am currently using a Caltric stator (about $90). They are an eBay seller that has a pretty good part. It's working fine so far, almost a year (I think, I'll have to check my records).

            Gaskets are cheap. You might as well order 2 or 3 and have spares. You just never know.

            I would not recommend Electrosport or RM Stator.

              Bringing this one back from the archives...
              I read on an ATV forum somewhere earlier today that someone swore that the Caltric Stators were the exact same stator as the RM Stators, only with a lower price. I have read only good things about the Caltrics on here. Maybe in reference to our models they aren't the same, but who knows.

                If your bike doesn't have a tendency to burn up stators then the Caltric will work fine. My bike ate three (two from me) Caltric stators before I upgraded to a Rick's Electric and a Compufire. Honestly though I would just pop for the Ricks, I got mine off Amazon for $120 and trying to save a few bucks was NOT worth all the extra hassle the cheap ones gave me.

                  Don't forget to test the R/R, buying everything else and using a bad R/R is going to make you end up right back where you are.

                    To Chuck78; remember that both your bikes likely use a 12 pole stator, Last time that I looked at Caltric, there was some confusion with the pre 1980's bikes. Ask for a pic of actual stator to be sure.

                      I was a bit suspicious of that as it lists many 1980 - 1986 models of 400/425/450/etc.but only 77-79 GS750, & the photo given definitely looks like an 18 pole stator. It still could be the proper unit as a lot of high volume sellers will just use a generic photo to keep listing management simplified. I will be very cautious none the less.
                      However if a Rick's unit is much higher quality and I can find one for as low as $120 as I read in a 2 year old or so post, maybe I should just minimize my risks in the purchase and longevity of the product and go for the better unit.

                        From other members here I was under the impression that starting in 1980 all models switched to an 18 pole stator. That Caltric listings state otherwise however. Is anyone able to confirm this???

                          Caltric might be using a generic photo- but their listings are inaccurate- 1980 stators were 18 pole, so a stator for an 82 gs450 would not work (at least very well) on a 78 model bike. If you can get a Rick's for your bike, go for it.

                              Could it potentially be that some of the 250-450 models retained the 12 pole stators through the mid-80's? The listings confirm that 80-83 GS750's (&GS550's) used a different stator than 77-79 GS550&750. This part of it we know as a confirmd fact. The compatibility with 80's 250-450 models having a 12 pole unit is uncertain in my mind still, but may be so????
